fishing in port macquarie

With two stunning rivers, a coastline of beaches and a fish-friendly climate, the Port Macquarie region is a fishing paradise. Whether you’re a keen angler or a less-ecperienced holiday-maker looking to try for a bite, you’re spoilt for choice when It comes to fishing spots in the area.

Head out from your Port Macquarie accommodation at Northpoint, and whichever direction you go, there’s a good chance you’ll be bringing home some fish for dinner. Here are some of the easy options for throwing in a line in the region:

The Hastings River

You’ll spot the Hastings from your Northpoint apartment, as it runs right alongside town at Port Macquarie. The Southern Breakwall near the mouth of the river is just a short walk from Northpoint, and a great spot for fish such as tailor and bream. Town Wharf in the CBD is also a short walk, and a great spot for families and beginners. Or head a little further down the river to Settlement Point picnic area for whiting, bream, flathead and a lovely spot for a picnic.

The Camden Haven River

The Camden Haven meets the ocean south of Port Macquarie at North Haven. There are many spots along the river at North Haven and Laurieton which are great for throwing in a line and picking up bream, flathead of luderick. Follow the river around from Laurieton to the Dunbogan side for a quieter spot along the river. There are also breakwalls at both North Haven and Dunbogan.

If you like something a little more adventurous like rock fishing or off-shore fishing, there are no shortage of spots in the region. Check out this site for some recommendations, as well as a list of boat ramps in the area.

Once you’ve caught your fill, head back to your self-contained Port Macquarie apartment where you’ll have everything you need to cook up a fresh seafood feast.
