Fun for the Kids – and the Grown Ups

When travelling with children, finding activities that appeal to the whole family can be challenging. Often parents focus on what appeals to the kids, but this doesn’t always provide for the adults as well.

The Port Macquarie/Hastings region is the perfect destination for a family-friendly holiday, with plenty of options that will appeal to the entire family – not just the kids. And you’ll be well set up to explore, if you base your stay in our self-contained, centrally-located, Port Macquarie accommodation at Northpoint Apartments.

Here are some of the region’s fantastic, family-friendly places to visit and things to do:

Meet a koala or two:

Port Macquarie is home to the famous Koala Hospital, where you can see first-hand the valuable work being done to protect this at-risk species. Take a tour and see the koalas currently in care. You can also get up close to koalas at the Billabong Zoo, a great place to hear wildlife talks, pat a koala, feed kangaroos and see a large variety of animals, including lions, snow leopards, cheetahs, red pandas, snakes, Fennec foxes and meerkats.

Step back in time:

Learn about the history of the region with a visit to Timbertown at nearby Wauchope. Ride a steam train, see the whip cracking demonstration, watch a blacksmith in action, and experience life as it was in the past. Closer to Port Macquarie, take a look around Roto House, a beautifully-preserved late-Victorian building set up as a museum and real-to-life house of the times. Bring a picnic and enjoy the beautiful grounds as well.

Get your skates on:

Remember being an expert on skates when you were a kid? See if you’ve still got what it takes at Port Macquarie’s newest entertainment facility: Planet X. Planet X features an indoor skating rink and laser skirmish facility, as well as arcade games (including air hockey and retro pinball for the grown-ups), party facilities and a kiosk.

Pick berries:

The best-tasting berries are those you pick straight from the bush, and there are several berry farms in the region which allow you to pick your own. At Ricardoes, just up the highway from Port Macquarie, you can pick your own strawberries inside two acres of greenhouses, and grab some award-winning tomatoes while you’re there. Take a scenic drive and pick blueberries at Brackenridge Berries in Watui, where you can fill a bucket (and sample as you go). A picnic and swim at nearby Watui falls is the perfect way to cool down after a berry-picking workout. (Note: berry picking is seasonal, check websites for details.)

Drink wine and lose the kids:

It’s a win-win for adults and children alike at Bago Vineyards where you can enjoy some wine tasting in a beautiful setting, and indulge in a platter of local cheese and meats on the side, all while the kids get lost… ahem, have fun… in the huge hedge maze. Keep an eye out for special events such as jazz in the vines (monthly) and grape stomping, too.

Get back to nature:

The region is bursting with options for the nature-loving family, with beaches, national parks and scenic drives aplenty. Beach-hop the coast from Port Macquarie through Bonny Hills to Laurieton, and then check out the view from North Brother mountain. Or take a leisurely walk along the Port Macquarie foreshore, spot dolphins and stop for a coffee at one of the many cafes along the way. Families may also enjoy the boardwalk through the rainforest at Sea Acres National Park, right in Port Macquarie. For other great walks and scenic drives, visit the NSW National Parks and Wildlife website.
