These days, every second person seems to run. Whether it’s an early morning jog before work, a quick 5km parkrun on the weekend, or a fun run for a charity, more and more people are taking up running for fun and fitness.
There are running groups, colour runs, mud runs and trail runs. You can combine mountain biking and running, take on an obstacle course, or run as part of a triathlon. You can run for free, run to raise money, or pay to enter a race (and receive your own commemorative medallion). There’s something for every age, ability and budget.
Wherever you fit in the broad spectrum of running hobbyists, you’ll find plenty of options to satisfy your running cravings in the region, and your self-contained Port Macquarie accommodation at Northpoint will make a great base.
On 20-22 July endurance enthusiasts can take on the Elephant Trail Race, with distance options of 100 miles, 100 kilometres, 50 kilometres, 25 kilometres, 13 kilometres and a kids’ trail race. Less than an hour from Port Macquarie the event takes its name from the shape of the mountain on which it is held: Mount Cairncross.
Closer to the coast, and a bit more of a sprint, try the King of the Mountain 5km fun run/walk, which will be held in Laurieton on Sunday 19 August. This popular annual event run by Camden Haven Surf Life Saving Club takes participants up North Brother mountain, where the views from the top are well worth the effort of getting there.
If you like to combine your two feet with two wheels, check out two great mountain biking events coming up. On 18-19 August the inaugural Port Macquarie MTB Festival offers options for various distances and age groups, and some great scenery along the route. On 25-26 August, the Port Macquarie MTB and Trail Running Festival gives you the choice to combine mountain biking and trail running – or you can stick to one or the other if you prefer.
Come spring and the annual Beach to Brother running festival on 30th September offers a marathon, half marathon, 10km dash and 5km fun run, as well as a relay marathon option. Follow the spectacular coastline and finish at one of the most scenic locations in the region, at the top of North Brother mountain in Laurieton.
And of course, every Saturday morning of the year at 7am, you’ll find the 5km Port Macquarie parkrun.
Whether you run to win or just run to keep healthy, you can easily combine your love of running with a fantastic Port Macquarie holiday at Northpoint Apartments.
